Question

My baby is one month old, and during the health check, the jaundice index was 7.8. The doctor advised to stop breastfeeding for three days. Three days later, the index dropped to 5.4. I want to know if medication is still needed, and whether the current index is normal.

Answer

Generally, most babies will experience physiological jaundice within the first three days after birth, which usually subsides within 14 days and typically does not require special treatment, with a good prognosis. However, if jaundice appears within 24 hours after birth, and is severe or progresses rapidly, or recurs after subsiding, it may indicate pathological jaundice. If the baby’s condition is uncertain, it is recommended to consult a doctor promptly to avoid delaying treatment.
