Question
The newborn experienced seizures on the second day of birth. What could be the cause, and how should treatment and prevention be carried out?
Answer
The newborn developed seizures on the third day after birth. An MRI revealed skin breaks and hemorrhaging on the cerebral cortex. The initial hypothesis is that the seizures are due to regional abnormal neural discharge caused by damage to the brain cortex. The possible causes of these skin breaks and hemorrhages may be the baby aspirating amniotic fluid or birth injuries during delivery. Currently, it appears that the baby’s brain injury is not severe, and there should not be any sequelae if recovery is good. Additionally, the examination also found that the baby has an atrial septal defect, a common heart defect that may close spontaneously within a year of birth. It is recommended to continuously monitor the baby’s brain injury condition, regularly perform MRI scans of the brain, and provide necessary neurotrophic treatment. Early massage, tactile therapy, and timely intervention in rehabilitation training when abnormal conditions arise can all aid in the baby’s recovery.
