Question

My baby is 21 days old, and the jaundice has not receded. I am breastfeeding and also giving a little formula milk. The baby is able to eat and sleep well, and the stool is normal. This morning, the doctor at the hospital asked for a blood test, and the results were a total bilirubin of 151, direct bilirubin of 9.1, and indirect bilirubin of 142. The doctor said to be hospitalized for close observation. Is this serious? Or can medication bring it down? I’m in a hurry!

Answer

If a newborn’s jaundice persists for over 21 days, it may indicate pathological jaundice. The causes of infant jaundice are numerous, including hemolytic disease of the newborn, sickle cell anemia, and perinatal diseases in infants. These conditions not only can cause hyperbilirubinemia and bilirubin encephalopathy but also lead to symptoms such as anemia, respiratory distress, and brain edema. It is advisable to hospitalize for observation and treatment, as most cases resolve quickly if the condition is not severe. It is not recommended to take medication at home.
