Question
My newborn is 50 days old and their stool color is half yellow and half green. What could be the cause, and how can it be prevented?
Answer
During breastfeeding, a newborn’s stool may be loose and its color can range from yellow to green, with green often indicating poor bilirubin reduction, which is usually nothing to worry about. Normally, a baby has 2 to 3 bowel movements a day and gains at least two pounds in weight each month. If the frequency of bowel movements suddenly increases to 4 to 5 times a day and the consistency changes, be aware that the baby may be experiencing diarrhea. If unsure, it is recommended to have the baby’s stool tested to confirm the diagnosis and take appropriate treatment measures.
