Question

The newborn has developed jaundice with an unknown cause. The child has been restless and crying frequently recently. Medical examination has not shown any abnormalities. What could be the possible causes of the baby developing jaundice?

Answer

Neonatal jaundice can be caused by either physiological or pathological reasons. Physiological jaundice is usually mild, affecting only the face and neck, or may extend to the entire body, but it typically resolves within 2 to 3 days and the skin color returns to normal within 5 to 6 days. In severe cases, it may last for more than a week, especially in premature infants who may experience it for up to 4 weeks. The stools remain yellow, and the urine does not contain bilirubin. Blue light therapy is recommended as it may help improve the condition.
