Question
I didn’t know he had this condition, and he’s not feeling well either. When should infants start taking calcium supplements?
Answer
Hello! For breastfed infants, it is recommended to start calcium supplements after three months. For babies on mixed or formula feeding, calcium supplements can be initiated after one month. From 0 to 6 months, infants need 300 milligrams of calcium per day; from 6 to 12 months, 400 milligrams per day; and from 1 to 3 years, 600 milligrams per day. As babies grow and develop, their calcium requirements gradually increase. Please note to let your baby get plenty of sunlight. In addition to calcium supplementation, it is recommended to also supplement with vitamin D to promote the absorption of calcium by the baby.
