Question
Does the vaccine cause seizures? My child had a vaccine yesterday and experienced seizures, frothing at the mouth, and loss of consciousness a few hours later. This has never happened before when they received vaccines. I want to ask, is the seizure, frothing at the mouth, and loss of consciousness in infants due to the vaccine or epilepsy?
Answer
Vaccines generally do not cause seizures. These symptoms may be due to fever, low blood calcium, or low blood magnesium. Most often, seizures are caused by fever. If there is a deficiency of calcium in the body, seizures are more likely to occur during fever. If it is caused by fever, the first treatment should be antipyretic and anticonvulsant therapy. If it is due to a calcium deficiency, calcium supplementation and anticonvulsant treatment should be administered. However, for children under 2 years old, epilepsy is usually not considered as a primary possibility.
