Question
What is the genetic nature of congenital optic nerve atrophy?
Answer
Optic nerve atrophy is the ultimate result of optic nerve damage, characterized by the degeneration and disappearance of optic nerve fibers, conduction dysfunction, and subsequent changes in visual field, vision loss, and even blindness. The central retinal artery is the only source of nutrition for the inner layer of the retina. Due to its terminal artery nature, there is no anastomosis between the branches. Once blocked, it causes acute ischemia in the supplied area of the retina.
