Question
Why do infants get dacryocystitis?
Answer
Infant dacryocystitis is a common condition caused by obstruction of the tear ducts, often occurring soon after birth. Symptoms include swelling and fluid accumulation below the eyelids, as well as eyes that are frequently watery. This condition may be due to underdevelopment or abnormality of the lacrimal sac, or it could be caused by bacterial infection. Treatment methods include antibiotic therapy, lacrimal sac massage, topical application of antibiotic eye drops in the affected area, or surgical irrigation of the lacrimal sac. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to correct the obstruction of the tear duct.
