How is intellectual disability treated?

The treatment for congenital intellectual disability depends on the underlying cause, such as phenylketonuria and cretinism. If diagnosed and treated within the first three months after birth, normal intelligence can be expected to be restored. If treatment is delayed until after six months, intellectual impairment is almost inevitable. For children aged 3 to 4, treatment also helps with physical development.
