Question

Eye swelling, sudden vision loss, poor light sensitivity, and viral infection within a week.

Answer

Optic neuritis is an inflammatory condition of the intraocular portion of the optic nerve, often accompanied by pain behind the eyes, loss of light perception, dilated pupil, and reduced pupillary light reflex. The lesions primarily affect the optic disc, but may also involve the retina or the choroid. The causes of optic neuritis are complex, including regional inflammation, systemic diseases, poisoning, and other factors. Treatment should be targeted at the underlying cause, which may include high-dose corticosteroid therapy and supportive care. Patients should rest in bed, drink plenty of water, avoid spicy foods, quit smoking and alcohol, wear sunglasses when going out, and actively treat the underlying disease.
