Question
I went for a check-up two days ago when I was 20 weeks pregnant, and the results said my NF value was slightly elevated at about 6.8mm, but all other developments were normal. Is this a big issue? I’m now 20 weeks and 5 days pregnant, and I have a follow-up appointment in two weeks. Should I do the amniocentesis now or wait until after the follow-up? I’m really anxious for an answer, thank you. Also, the test says my heart rate is irregular.
Answer
Based on your description, an abnormal NF value (nuchal fold thickness) during pregnancy may suggest a risk of chromosomal abnormalities or fetal malformations. Generally, an NF value over 6mm is considered abnormal and may increase the risk of chromosomal abnormalities. In this case, it is reasonable for your doctor to recommend an amniocentesis, which is a common prenatal diagnostic method used to detect chromosomal abnormalities. Although amniocentesis carries risks, it is an important method for obtaining a definitive diagnosis in high-risk pregnancy situations. It is advisable to follow your doctor’s advice and undergo an amniocentesis as soon as possible to obtain a diagnosis early and make appropriate decisions. Additionally, an irregular heart rate also requires further monitoring and assessment. Please keep close contact with your doctor and follow professional advice.
