Question
What could be the reasons and symptoms for a baby’s yellow skin?
Answer
Neonatal jaundice is typically caused by an elevated bilirubin concentration in the blood. Mild physiological jaundice usually appears 2-3 days after birth, affecting the face, neck, and trunk, and subsides within 5-6 days. Severe cases may cover the entire body and last over 1 week, even up to 4 weeks. The baby’s feces and urine may also show signs of jaundice. If jaundice persists for more than 14 days without fading, it is advisable to undergo a blood test to determine if it is pathological jaundice caused by liver and bile duct diseases. It is recommended to visit the hospital for further examination to confirm the diagnosis.
