Question
What is nystagmus?
Answer
Nystagmus is a disorder characterized by continuous horizontal, pendulum-type tremors of the eyes, typically without any specific changes in the eyes themselves. The exact pathogenesis is not yet clear, but it has a strong genetic component, with reports of autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, and X-linked dominant and recessive inheritance patterns, with X-linked dominant inheritance being more common. The condition remains unchanged throughout life, and there is currently no specific treatment method in clinical practice. The treatment principles include: ① Correcting refractive errors with glasses; ② Wearing prismatic lenses for those with strabismus or cervical deviation; ③ Surgical weakening of the related extraocular muscles to reduce the severity of the nystagmus.
