Question

My baby is now two years and seven months old and has been experiencing frequent nighttime urination recently, with only a small amount of urine each time, up to seven or eight times a night. They don’t drink much water. Is this normal? Do we need to see a doctor?

Answer

Frequent nighttime urination in babies can be normal as children’s control over urination is not yet mature during the growth process. You can first observe for two days to ensure the baby drinks plenty of water. Additionally, avoid giving the baby too much milk or diluted drinks before bedtime. When the baby turns three, you can start feeding them thicker foods like congee, and encourage them to have an early dinner to establish good habits. Consuming potassium-rich foods such as mushrooms, cabbage, beans, peanuts, walnuts, watermelons, and bananas can also help improve the issue of frequent urination. If the situation persists or is accompanied by other discomforts, it is recommended to consult a doctor.
