Question
When can babies start eating solid foods? My baby is 8 months and a half, and since starting solid foods, she has been having bowel movements only once a week, occasionally normal, but sometimes with abdominal bloating and pain. I wanted to gently rub her belly, but she wouldn’t let me; when I touch her belly while she’s awake, she rolls away and doesn’t want me to touch. When she naps, if I try to touch her belly, she cries and closes my hand. The tongue coating has been peeling off, and I can’t keep using lubricant. I’ve asked several doctors, and they all say to take it easy and nourish her slowly, but as a parent, this is very concerning! I want to know if there are any other methods.
Answer
A normal child should have a bowel movement once a day, occasionally every two or three days, but having a bowel movement once a week is still abnormal. This could indicate long-term constipation or rectal abnormalities. To promote gastrointestinal movement, it’s recommended to gently rub the baby’s belly every day. Medications such as probiotics or Douchi pills can be taken; half a pill should be dissolved and taken twice a day. If the baby continues to have pain, it’s advisable to take her to the hospital for a thorough check-up. Wishing you a quick recovery and good health and happiness in life.
