Question

My child was born recently and their eyes always tear up, and they tend to cry a lot. How should retinopathy of prematurity be screened in premature babies?

Answer

Generally, retinopathy of prematurity recurs in babies born before 32 weeks, weighing less than 1500 grams, with a history of high-concentration oxygen therapy, and developmental delay. Fundus examination must be performed. The purpose is mainly to prevent the recurrence of retinopathy of prematurity in premature babies. During the examination, a regional topical anesthetic eye drop is typically applied, followed by a detailed fundus examination using professional equipment. The procedure takes very little time. If any abnormalities are detected, timely laser treatment should be administered.
