Question

In a welfare institution, there is a child who shows symptoms such as extreme restlessness, developmental delay, headaches, dry retching, anorexia, and seizures. Could these symptoms be indicative of hydrocephalus? What are the methods to alleviate these symptoms?

Answer

Pediatric hydrocephalus typically presents with symptoms such as dull reactions and significantly reduced head circumference. Headaches and dry retching are among the manifestations of intracranial hypertension. These symptoms may also be associated with intracranial tumor occupancy. It is recommended to undergo a cranial MRI scan and enhanced scanning for an accurate diagnosis. If diagnosed with simple hydrocephalus, treatment can be achieved through neuroendoscopic surgery for third ventriculostomy or ventriculo-peritoneal shunting. For hydrocephalus caused by intracranial tumor occupancy, surgical removal of the tumor is necessary. In cases of malignant tumors, treatment may no longer be applicable.
