Question

Why do babies get infantile convulsions?

Answer

Birth injuries are a common cause of symptomatic epilepsy in infants. Causes include forceps delivery, midwife manipulation, cephalopelvic disproportion, abnormal fetal position, macrosomia, prolonged labor, and the age of the primigravida. Congenital diseases such as brain malformations, hydrocephalus, chromosomal abnormalities, incomplete brain development, delayed brain development, and brain atrophy are also factors. Conditions like amniotic fluid aspiration, fetal respiratory distress, umbilical cord around the neck, placental abruption, placenta previa, and cesarean section can significantly increase the incidence. After various encephalitis, meningitis, and brain abscesses, many patients may develop sequelae of infantile convulsions.
