Question
The child’s eyes have been watering since birth, and they always seem to be crying. Can glaucoma lead to blindness?
Answer
Some patients with glaucoma require surgical treatment, and after surgery, they only pay attention to observing the intraocular pressure, without checking for changes in the visual field. Or some patients take medication regularly but do not measure the intraocular pressure, which usually cannot determine the effectiveness of the medication control. This situation may also lead to blindness. Therefore, both treatment and examination are indispensable. Some patients with glaucoma have abnormalities in hemodynamics, such as cardiovascular diseases, increased blood viscosity, and low blood pressure. When these factors interact, they usually cause the patient’s optic nerve to be in a state of chronic insufficient blood supply for a long time, leading to gradual narrowing of the visual field and ultimately possibly leading to blindness.
