Question

I’ve been feeling an extremely painful eye for the past two days, and my vision has deteriorated significantly. I also feel nauseous and want to vomit. Could you advise if these are symptoms of angle-closure glaucoma? Are there any other symptoms associated with angle-closure glaucoma?

Answer

Typically, patients with angle-closure glaucoma may experience severe eye pain and headache on the same side. This is often accompanied by nausea and dry heaves, and sometimes can be associated with fever chills, constipation, and nausea with vomiting. During an acute recurrence, the intraocular pressure may suddenly rise. Generally, it is above 5.20 kPa (40 mmHg), and in severe cases, it can reach above 13.4 kPa (100 mmHg). For such cases, if not treated promptly, deafness can occur within 24 to 48 hours, and some people refer to it as an acute attack of glaucoma.
