Question

A 57-year-old patient with open-angle glaucoma asks whether surgery can still be performed after 30 years of the disease.

Answer

For patients with open-angle glaucoma, if the optic nerve has been damaged and there is atrophy, the effectiveness of surgical treatment is limited and cannot completely restore vision. However, if intraocular pressure cannot be controlled, surgery can be considered to alleviate symptoms and pain. Currently, if the intraocular pressure is normal, there is no need for surgery.
