Question
What should I do if a child swallows gum?
Answer
Although it is not recommended to swallow gum, it can be safely ingested. The gum’s gelatinous components are not digested and are usually excreted with feces. It is suggested to give the child some fiber-rich foods to promote intestinal peristalsis. Doctors point out that the inner walls of the gastrointestinal tract are smooth and can secrete a large amount of mucus, so gum will not adhere to the intestines and will naturally pass out of the body without the need for surgery. However, to avoid unnecessary risks, it is best not to give children gum, as it is not beneficial and could cause serious problems if accidentally inhaled into the trachea.
