Question

Does mild intellectual disability have a genetic component?

Answer

Apart from a few mild intellectual disability cases with clear etiologies that can be treated with medication early on, most patients require education and training. The purpose of education is to teach them survival skills and enable them to be as self-reliant as possible; training is aimed at helping them manage their daily lives and reduce their dependence on others. Currently, there is a trend to place mild intellectual disability patients in regular school environments for education, which is known as normal education. For patients with severe and extremely severe intellectual disability, the main issues are related to living and care. Since most extremely severe patients die in childhood, it is rare to see adult patients with severe or extremely severe intellectual disabilities.
