Question

Can Hepatitis B carriers have children? If one partner is a Hepatitis B carrier and the other has normal liver function, is it possible to consider having a child, and what is the risk of the child contracting Hepatitis B?

Answer

Hepatitis B virus is primarily transmitted through mother-to-child transmission, but if the mother is a Hepatitis B carrier, measures can be taken to reduce the risk of transmission to the newborn. It is recommended to administer one milliliter of Hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG) within 6 hours after birth and at one month, and to inject 30 micrograms of the Hepatitis B vaccine within 24 hours after birth. Then, another 10 micrograms of the Hepatitis B vaccine should be administered at one month and six months after birth. This can effectively prevent transmission with a success rate of up to 95%.
