Down Syndrome, also known as trisomy 21 or congenital idiocy, is a common chromosomal abnormality caused by an extra copy of the 21st chromosome, resulting in more than two copies of this chromosome in the cells. This condition leads to specific physical features and delayed intellectual development. The incidence of Down Syndrome is not low, and the risk of a fetus having Down Syndrome increases with the age of the pregnant woman. During pregnancy, expectant mothers can undergo Down Syndrome screening to assess the risk of their fetus having Down Syndrome.
