Question

What is Bell’s palsy?

Answer

Bell’s palsy is an acute, unilateral facial muscle paralysis, also known as facial neuritis. It is usually accompanied by the inability to fully close the eyes, and when attempting to close them, the affected side of the eye will rapidly turn inward and upward, exposing the white of the eye, a phenomenon known as the “Bell’s phenomenon.” Treatment should involve early use of corticosteroids, antiviral medications, and nerve-nourishing drugs. In the recovery phase, physical therapy can be performed, as well as active or passive facial muscle exercises after recovery.
