Question

Is newborn jaundice with a level of 280 severe? My baby is one month old, and lately, their complexion and body have turned yellowish, and they don’t seem to be eating much. They are always sleeping. When we took them to the hospital, the jaundice index was 280. Do we have to stay in the hospital for blue light therapy?

Answer

Newborn jaundice is generally categorized into physiological and pathological types. Physiological jaundice usually resolves on its own within two weeks after birth and does not present any other abnormal symptoms. Pathological jaundice may require hospitalization for blue light therapy, especially if the jaundice index is high or does not recede. Generally speaking, full-term infants’ jaundice index should not exceed 204μmol/L, and premature infants should not exceed 255μmol/L. It is recommended to closely monitor your baby’s condition and consult with a doctor for professional advice.
