Question
What is nephrotic syndrome? I recently had a health check-up, and my doctor said I might have this condition. I’m not very clear about this disease, can you explain it to me? Is it difficult to treat? Will it affect my future marriage and children? Thank you.
Answer
Nephrotic syndrome is primarily characterized by large amounts of proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, (severe) edema, and hyperlipidemia, collectively known as the “highs and lows.” It is a clinical syndrome with metabolic disturbances. Patients with severe edema and hypoalbuminemia should rest in bed. They can only get up and move around once the edema subsides and their condition improves. In the later stages, nephrotic syndrome can lead to renal dysfunction and even uremia. Currently, there is no cure for this disease, and it requires long-term treatment with hormone-like medications. However, it does not affect fertility in the next generation. There’s no need for you to worry about it.
