Question
How can one judge the severity of neonatal jaundice by the naked eye?
Answer
Firstly, check if the newborn’s conjunctiva (the white part of the eye) has started to turn yellow. If it does, it may indicate that the baby has jaundice. Next, you can judge the severity of the jaundice. Jaundice is generally categorized as mild, moderate, and severe. If the jaundice is limited to the face and other parts of the skin do not show significant yellowing, then the severity is mild. If the yellowing extends to the chest, abdomen, and limbs (above the elbow and knee joints), it indicates a moderate level of jaundice.
