Question

What Are the Sequelae of Pediatric Poliomyelitis?

Answer

The sequelae of pediatric poliomyelitis are a severe disabling condition that leads to lifelong limb disabilities in children. Also known as poliomyelitis, pediatric poliomyelitis is an acute infectious disease caused by the poliovirus. Symptoms include hip joint contractures, flexion or relaxation that does not constitute hip dislocation, genu varum or genu valgum of the knees, inward or outward bending of the lower legs, and so on. In addition, there may be problems such as muscle atrophy and weakness, unequal length of both limbs, and various deformities of the feet, spine, and pelvis. Treatment can be achieved through surgical correction.
