Question

How can you distinguish between different types of newborn jaundice through observation and symptoms?

Answer

By observing the changes in skin color, you can initially determine the severity of newborn jaundice. For example, if jaundice appears on the head and face, it usually indicates a bilirubin level of about 6mg/dl; if it appears on the trunk, the bilirubin level is approximately 9mg/dl; and if the color changes on the limbs and palms of the hands, the bilirubin level may reach up to 15mg/dl. If the bilirubin level exceeds the normal range, appropriate treatment should be sought to wish for the patient’s early recovery.
