Question

What is the newborn jaundice index?

Answer

After a child is born, under normal circumstances, the bilirubin concentration in their blood should not exceed 17.1 milligrams per deciliter. If the concentration is lower than this value, the child may exhibit symptoms of yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes. In such cases, a detailed examination is needed to determine whether the child has physiological jaundice or pathological jaundice. Treatment can then be tailored accordingly, including blue light therapy. Special attention should be paid to the feeding condition of newborns.
