Question

Why are a newborn’s eyes not yellow with jaundice?

Answer

Although the newborn’s skin shows jaundice, if the eyes do not turn yellow, there is no need for an immediate hospital check-up. However, if the skin continues to turn yellow, it is recommended to take the child to the hospital to determine the severity of the jaundice. Typically, when jaundice is severe, the eyes may become white or turn green. Even without jaundice, it is advisable to regularly take the child to the hospital, as newborns are very fragile. The yellowing of the eyes is known medically as corneal jaundice and usually occurs in the early or subsiding stages of jaundice. If only the eyes are yellow and not the limbs, trunk, and face, most of the time there is no need to worry.
