Question
How is Down syndrome treated?
Answer
The cause of Down syndrome is due to the failure of the 21st chromosome to normally segregate during oocyte meiosis, resulting in an extra copy of the 21st chromosome in the patient’s body, with a karyotype of 47, XX (XY), +21. Both advanced and early age are risk factors for the development of Down syndrome, and an older father’s age may also be associated. The exact cause of Down syndrome has not yet been clearly identified, but researchers have made certain advancements in embryology and neuropathology. However, there is currently no effective treatment method, and patients should receive long-term, patient education and training.
