Question

Is a newborn’s jaundice level of 16.2 severe?

Answer

If the jaundice index is 16.2, it is relatively high. We need to go to the hospital for a blood test to further clarify the bilirubin levels. We need timely blue light therapy and oral medication to reduce the jaundice and prevent further complications such as bilirubin encephalopathy or kernicterus. Usually, continuous blue light therapy is required for about a week. In case of further deterioration, blood transfusion treatment may be needed. In daily care, it is also recommended to expose the baby to more sunlight and increase fluid intake for urination.
