Down syndrome, also referred to as trisomy 21, is a genetic disorder resulting from an extra copy of the 21st chromosome. This extra chromosome can cause a variety of developmental and physiological issues, such as intellectual disability, distinctive facial features, and abnormalities in the heart and other organs. Down syndrome is the most common type of chromosomal abnormality, affecting one in every 800 to 1,000 newborns.
