Question

Can congenital biliary atresia in newborns be treated?

Answer

Congenital biliary atresia is a common congenital anomaly in newborns, the exact cause of which is still not fully understood. According to clinical manifestations, it can be divided into curable and incurable types. For cases of the curable type, early treatment results are better; while for cases of the incurable type, the treatment results are worse. Severe congenital biliary atresia may lead to liver failure, ascites, and varices of the esophageal and gastric fundus. Once diagnosed, it is recommended to undergo surgical treatment within three months after birth.
