Questions
What are the differences between adult and newborn appendicitis? What are the treatment methods for acute and chronic appendicitis?
Answers
Adult appendicitis and newborn appendicitis differ in terms of causative bacteria, treatment methods, and prognosis. Acute appendicitis is an acute infection of the periumbilical tissues, which may progress to perinephric cellulitis, umbilical abscess, or even peritonitis and sepsis. Chronic appendicitis is caused by delayed treatment of infection or recurrent episodes. Treatment-wise, acute appendicitis usually requires antibiotics, sometimes necessitating surgical incision and drainage; while chronic appendicitis requires longer-term antibiotic treatment and debridement surgery. For patients with abscesses, surgical incision and drainage is a necessary treatment measure.
