Question
How Long Does It Take for Newborn Navel Inflammation to Heal?
Answer
Newborn navel inflammation usually occurs due to improper navel care, leading to bacterial infection. Commonly found bacteria include Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, or Streptococcus hemolyticus. During examination, it can be observed that the baby’s navel has mucus or purulent discharge, and the skin around the navel ring is red. Newborns have lower immunity and are more susceptible to infections, especially before the umbilical cord falls off. If it is not cleaned in time, it may lead to infection, known as navel inflammation. Symptoms include yellow discharge from the navel, localized swelling, and immediate disinfection is required. If the swelling area expands, antibiotic treatment may be necessary. The course of the disease generally lasts about a week.
