Question

How to deal with pediatric biliary ascariasis?

Answer

Biliary ascariasis is a disease caused by worms burrowing into the bile ducts. It is a common parasitic disease in humans, especially children, and has a higher infection rate in rural areas and regions with poor sanitation. The parasitic roundworms reside in the human small intestine, consume nutrients, and hinder the digestion and absorption functions, leading to malnutrition, anemia, abdominal pain, and other symptoms in children. Severe complications such as acute biliary infection, liver abscess, intraductal hemorrhage, and necrotizing acute pancreatitis may occur. Surgical treatment should be considered to cut open the bile duct and remove the worms.
