Question
Can Congenital Bile Duct Obstruction Be Cured?
Answer
Congenital bile duct obstruction in newborns is primarily caused by infection with the hepatitis B virus or by cytomegalovirus. After being infected by these viruses, the bile ducts gradually fibrotize, leading to obstruction of the bile duct system. The only treatment for congenital bile duct obstruction is surgery, especially for infants with severe conditions, who may need to wait until they have developed to undergo liver transplant surgery.
