Question

Why do newborns have jaundice, and why are the test values elevated?

Answer

Newborn jaundice is categorized into physiological jaundice and pathological jaundice. Regardless of the type, any jaundice that exceeds the normal range requires active treatment. Usually, within 3 to 4 days after birth, the jaundice level is around 178, which is not considered too high, often related to blood incompatibility. It is recommended to adopt rapid and effective methods to eliminate jaundice, such as using blue light therapy. If the cause can be identified, anti-infection treatment should be provided. For physiological jaundice, blue light therapy or oral jaundice-lowering medication can be administered.
