Question
Why can’t a 7-lb baby lift their head? My baby weighed over 5 lbs at birth and now weighs 7 lbs, but still can’t lift their head. I’m worried if this is normal or if there’s a problem?
Answer
Babies typically learn to lift their heads within the first two months after birth. This skill development is not related to the baby’s weight. If your baby hasn’t learned to lift their head by three months old, you can start some lifting exercises. For example, you can hold your baby’s back and buttocks in your hands, keeping them upright, and take them for a look around indoors or outdoors. If there’s another adult at home, you can use your fingers to point at objects to attract the baby’s attention and spark curiosity. After each exercise, remember to gently massage your baby’s back to relax the muscles and make them feel comfortable. Allow your baby to rest on their back for a while after the activity.
