Question
A relative’s child was born full-term, so we call him the Full-Term Little Guy. I’ve heard a saying that full-term little guys aren’t smart. Is there any scientific basis for this, and why would full-term little guys not be smart?
Answer
Full-term infants refer to those with a birth weight less than 10% below the average weight of infants of the same gestational age, while full-term infants (gestational age between 37 weeks and 42 weeks) have a birth weight exceeding 2500 grams. These infants may be the result of intrauterine growth restriction. They have sufficient gestational age at birth but low postnatal abilities. They are prone to congenital abnormalities such as meconium aspiration, hypothermia, polycythemia, hypoglycemia, and intrauterine infection. Especially in terms of development, neuropsychological behavior, and intellectual delay.
