Question

How many days after birth will a newborn have jaundice, and if there is no jaundice, does that mean everything is fine? Do we need to check the baby’s jaundice?

Answer

Newborn jaundice comes in two types: 1. Physiological jaundice, caused by an excess of bilirubin production, insufficient uptake of bilirubin by liver cells, and defects in bilirubin excretion, which usually resolves on its own. 2. Pathological jaundice, due to excessive bilirubin or disordered bilirubin metabolism, abnormal bile excretion, or hemolytic diseases, which require treatment. The treatment plan depends on the jaundice index. It is recommended to monitor the newborn’s condition.
