Question

What are the causes of neonatal jaundice?

Answer

Neonatal jaundice can be categorized into two types:

  1. Physiological jaundice: Caused by an excess of bilirubin production, insufficient uptake of bilirubin by liver cells, and defects in bilirubin excretion. This condition usually resolves on its own.
  2. Pathological jaundice: May be caused by excessive bilirubin, disordered bilirubin metabolism, bile duct obstruction, or hemolytic diseases and requires treatment. If jaundice persists, phototherapy or medication treatment may be adopted.
