Question

How can angle-closure glaucoma be improved? Symptoms include headache, eye swelling, blurred vision, and eye redness. Diagnosed in April and had an attack in early May. What treatment options are available now?

Answer

Angle-closure glaucoma occurs due to peripheral iris blockage of the trabecular meshwork or adhesions, leading to impaired aqueous humor outflow and increased intraocular pressure. The treatment principles include using medication to constrict the pupils before surgery to lower intraocular pressure, control inflammation, and then proceed with surgical treatment once the pressure is reduced. Pilocarpine (pilocarpine hydrochloride) can be used for pupil constriction, oral acetazolamide or intravenous injection of 20% mannitol can be used to lower intraocular pressure.
