Question

Is newborn jaundice easy to treat? My child has developed newborn jaundice, and after taking the medication, there is no improvement. Their face is still dark and yellow. What should I do?

Answer

Before treating newborn jaundice, it is important to first confirm the cause. If jaundice appears within 24 hours after birth, it may be due to hemolysis; if direct bilirubin levels are elevated, it could be caused by viral infection or liver and gallbladder diseases. Additionally, there is also a possibility of familial jaundice. If it is breast milk jaundice, you can try stopping breastfeeding for 3 days, as the jaundice usually decreases significantly. If the feeding is resumed and the jaundice reappears and worsens, further investigation is needed.
