Question

My baby is only 18 days old and sometimes experiences hiccups during play. When this happens, parents often hold the baby and gently pat their back, but the hiccups do not stop. Some elders suggest that if the baby has hiccups, they should be fed immediately to alleviate the symptoms. Is it appropriate to feed a newborn when they are hiccuping?

Answer

Newborn hiccups are often a physiological phenomenon, related to the baby’s incomplete development of stomach anatomy and the function of the lower esophageal sphincter. After each feeding, it is recommended to hold the baby vertically and gently pat their back until they hiccup, then let them sleep to prevent repeated vomiting and hiccups. As the baby grows, this symptom usually improves naturally. Generally, there is no major problem if there are no other discomfort symptoms. Consider giving a small amount of water to help recover, or temporarily stop feeding to avoid causing vomiting. If parents still have concerns, it is advisable to take the baby to the hospital for a physical examination.
